Expanding beyond the therapy room is a journey filled with opportunities and challenges. For therapists and mental health professionals, options like leveraging therapy technology, utilizing clear messaging, and other tactics can really help you push beyond the confines of the therapy room.
In a recent conversation with Cyndi Doyle, LPC-S, we explored how six tactics can help therapists diversify their practice and make a broader impact. Today, I'm excited to share this conversation with you!
TCCBB #91: Six Strategies for Expanding Beyond the Therapy Room: Harnessing Therapy Technology, Clear Messaging, and More!
Here are Cyndi's six strategies for expanding beyond the therapy room:
1. Embrace Therapy Technology Early
Using therapy technology to enhance therapeutic practices is becoming increasingly vital. In our chat, Cyndi shared her early experiences of using technology to reach a wider audience. Starting with a YouTube channel called “Forgetting Freud,” she and her business partner, Brandy, created content that gained traction, especially their videos on grief.
Despite humble beginnings—recording in a closet, for instance—Cyndi emphasized the importance of starting somewhere and growing from there. Haven't we all been there at some point?!
2. Identify and Fill Gaps in the Market
Cyndi’s professional journey took a significant turn when she identified a gap in resources for law enforcement marriages and relationships. Recognizing this unmet need, she wrote a book on the topic, which led to the development of a “train the trainer” program and numerous speaking engagements with national organizations.
Her niche, focusing on the intersection of law enforcement and personal relationships, positioned her as a subject matter expert and opened doors for paid speaking opportunities, but how did she get that message out there?
3. Utilize Clear Messaging
We chatted at length about the importance of impactful messaging and why this is crucial for any therapist looking to expand their reach. Cyndi's message, “Happy marriages create safer police officers,” is a powerful example of clear messaging.
Cyndi's data-backed premise that marriage and police officer safety go hand-in-hand immediately resonated with her audience and allowed her to grow her business. Ultimately, Cyndi's growth underscores the importance of well-crafted messages that address an audience's pain points.
Developing and repeating key messages ensures that the core ideas stick and make a lasting impact.
Adapting Messaging to Audience Needs
Understanding and adapting to the audience's needs is another critical aspect of effective communication. Initially, Cyndi misidentified her audience’s primary concern as wanting more sex, only to realize that deeper emotional connection and intimacy were the real issues.
This insight led her to adjust her messaging to better address the true pain points of her audience, demonstrating the importance of flexibility and responsiveness in communication.
Connect With Your Audience Without Compromising Client Privacy and Trust
Maintaining ethical boundaries while sharing personal information is crucial for therapists. Cyndi explains her approach to connecting with her audience by sharing personal anecdotes without compromising client privacy and trust. This balance is essential for building a genuine connection with the audience while adhering to professional ethical standards.
4. Leverage Therapy Technology and Networking
Using various platforms and networking effectively are essential strategies for expanding beyond the therapy room. Cyndi leverages her YouTube channel, blog, and podcast to build authority and attract a wider audience.
Networking with influential bloggers and participating in other people's platforms also plays a significant role in expanding her reach. These efforts highlight the importance of therapy technology in growing a professional network and audience.
5. Take Advantage of Publishing and Marketing Strategies
Building an audience before launching a book or major project is a key takeaway from our discussion. Starting with blogging helps create content, understand the audience's needs, and establish authority.
Tools like IngramSpark for self-publishing and print-on-demand options through platforms like Amazon can be effective strategies for therapists looking to publish their work.
6. Pricing and Valuing Professional Work
Cyndi determines her pricing for speaking engagements by calculating the earnings from equivalent time spent in the therapy room, including preparation, the actual engagement, and recovery afterward. Initially, discounted rates were offered for local engagements to build reputation and gain experience. With increased experience and confidence, rates were adjusted to reflect the value brought to each engagement, factoring in travel and other expenses.
Valuing time and expertise while considering accessibility for the audience is key. This approach ensures fair prices that honor professional worth and maintain accessibility for the target audience.
Encouraging Professional Growth Beyond the Therapy Room
For therapists and professionals looking to diversify their practice, embracing therapy technology, developing clear messaging, and leveraging multiple platforms are essential strategies. Persistence, adaptation, and strategic planning are crucial for creating a meaningful and impactful professional journey.
By sharing experiences and insights about therapy technology and ways we can expand our practices with one another, we can pave the way for a broader reach and a more significant impact in the field of therapy!
