How Polyvagal Therapy Transforms Trauma Treatment with Jennyfer Rosado, LPC-S

How Polyvagal Therapy Transforms Trauma Treatment.

Hello, everyone! I’m Dr. Kate Walker, and today we're diving deep into the transformative world of polyvagal therapy. Polyvagal therapy is a revolutionary approach to trauma treatment. In our latest session of “Texas Counselors Creating Badass Businesses,” I had the pleasure of hosting Jennyfer Rosado, LPC-S, an expert in polyvagal therapy.

Jennyfer has brought profound insights into how this approach is reshaping therapeutic practices by focusing on the body’s physiological responses to trauma, and I'm so excited to share them with you today.

TCCBB #116: How Polyvagal Therapy Transforms Trauma Treatment with Jennyfer Rosado, LPCS

What Is Polyvagal Therapy?

Jennyfer introduced us to polyvagal therapy, which is based on Dr. Stephen Porges' Polyvagal Theory. This theory focuses on the vagus nerve, a critical part of our nervous system that influences our heart, lungs, and digestive tract. Ultimately, it plays a key role in our emotional regulation and ability to connect socially.

“Polyvagal therapy involves a deep understanding of how the vagus nerve affects our state of safety or threat, which in turn affects our emotional and behavioral responses,” Jennyfer explained during the webinar. This approach offers a unique perspective on treatment by addressing the physiological underpinnings of trauma.

Practical Applications of Polyvagal Theory in Counseling

Jennyfer discussed her practical approach to integrating polyvagal theory into her counseling practice. She uses a detailed method of mapping the nervous system's states. Mapping these—ventral, sympathetic, and dorsal—can help clients understand and address their trauma responses effectively.

“This mapping enables us to navigate through trauma responses more effectively, guiding clients from a state of defense into a state of social engagement and healing,” Jennyfer noted.

The Role of Environmental Adjustments in Polyvagal Therapy

A significant portion of our discussion was dedicated to how environmental adjustments and personal cues can significantly influence therapeutic outcomes. Jennyfer emphasized the importance of these adjustments in creating a space that promotes a sense of safety. As we know, this is crucial for clients dealing with trauma.

“Adjusting our environment to make it feel safer can profoundly affect our nervous system’s perception, which is particularly crucial for clients dealing with trauma,” Jennyfer stated.

She highlighted the importance of co-regulation. Co-regulation is a technique where the therapist's presence helps regulate the client’s emotional state, enhancing resilience and promoting recovery.

Impact of Polyvagal Therapy on Clients with Complex Traumas

Jennyfer provided case studies from her practice, showcasing the transformative effects of polyvagal therapy on clients with complex traumas. These cases illustrated how polyvagal therapy had helped clients who found traditional therapies ineffective. As such, it offers a new pathway to healing by addressing physiological responses to trauma and helping clients develop a sense of internal safety.

“Polyvagal therapy has been transformative, offering clients a new lens to view their healing process and actively engage in shaping their path to recovery,” Jennyfer shared.

Final Reflections

As we concluded the webinar, Jennyfer encouraged all therapists to explore how polyvagal theory could enhance their practice. Jennyfer emphasized that using this therapy can provide new hope to clients struggling with trauma.

“Integrating polyvagal theory is about transforming our approach to support our clients' journeys toward healing more effectively,” she passionately stated.

Polyvagal therapy provides a compelling new perspective and practical techniques that deepen our impact as therapists. As we continue to explore and integrate these concepts, we better support our clients in navigating their pathways to recovery, transforming our practice into a sanctuary of safety and understanding.

“Embracing polyvagal theory has not only transformed my practice but also my perspective on healing. It is a powerful tool that I believe can significantly impact our field,” Jennyfer concluded. I'm so grateful for this interview and to Jennyfer for inspiring us to consider this innovative approach in our therapeutic work!
