TCCBB: Episode 73 The Counselor's Moral Compass for Obtaining Google Reviews and Managing Online Marketing

How to Approach Google Reviews for Therapists

In the realm of counseling, soliciting reviews from our clients treads on delicate ethical grounds. While we understand the power of reviews in today’s digital age, our primary commitment remains to the welfare and confidentiality of those we serve. So, how do we navigate this tricky area?

Let's talk about the question you’ve all been asking yourselves…

Can Therapists Ask for Google Reviews?

The heart of our discussion lies in navigating the uncertain waters of client feedback without crossing ethical boundaries. Counselors face unique ethical considerations when it comes to soliciting Google reviews or any form of testimonials from clients. This can make marketing for therapists really difficult!

The ethical guidelines and standards vary by jurisdiction and are set by professional counseling bodies, such as the American Counseling Association (ACA) in the United States or similar organizations worldwide.

General Considerations:

As you can see, these are some pretty serious considerations to think about when considering marketing and Google reviews for therapists. But we still need to market our Badass Businesses, so what can we do?

Five Recommendations for Your Online Marketing Strategy

  1. Check with Your Governing Body: Ethical standards vary, so it's crucial for counselors to consult the guidelines issued by their governing body or licensing board. Some organizations may have specific rules or interpretations regarding solicitation of reviews.
  2. Consider Alternative Approaches: Instead of directly soliciting reviews from clients, counselors might focus on building their online presence through general marketing practices, educational content like adding a blog to your website, and engagement with social media.
  3. Ask for Peer Reviews: One approach to building your online presence that I absolutely LOVE is through peer reviews. This method not only strengthens our professional community but also offers potential clients a glimpse into our professional credibility and expertise, without compromising our ethical stance.
  4. Aggregate Your Data: What do I mean by this? Well, it’s definitely appropriate to give your clients anonymous or de-identified surveys and feedback mechanisms. These can provide valuable insights into your practice’s effectiveness, which you can share proudly (and anonymously) to highlight your commitment to quality care.
  5. Seek Legal and Ethical Advice: If you're considering incorporating reviews into your practice's marketing strategy, consulting with an ethics board or legal professional familiar with health care law can provide tailored advice to navigate this complex area.

In short, while Google reviews can be a powerful tool for businesses, counselors must navigate these waters with caution, prioritizing ethical standards and client welfare above marketing benefits. Directly soliciting reviews from clients is generally discouraged or outright prohibited to avoid potential ethical conflicts and harm to the client-counselor relationship.

Final Thoughts Google Reviews for Therapists

We cherish the trust our clients place in us, and maintaining this trust is paramount, as I’m sure you’ll agree! It’s important to also consider this trust when we think about Google reviews and the like. You’ll likely get a less than stellar review at some point (it happens!), and our mindset when we respond is critical.

1. Abundance Mindset: Celebrating Community Over Competition

I advocate for a perspective shift from scarcity to abundance. The counseling needs in our communities are vast, and by supporting one another, we contribute to a richer, more accessible network of care!

One way to do this, as I have already mentioned, is to provide a peer review. Reviewing a colleague’s work is an act of professional generosity that enriches our entire field. This generosity on your part can remind you why you do what you do and why negative reviews don’t define your practice.

2. Responding to Negative Feedback with Grace

Please hear me when I say that NO one likes a negative review!! Even amongst hundreds of positive ones, our minds can fixate on that one negative review. At least mine does, anyway. And if yours doesn't, please teach me your ways!

Negative reviews can be disheartening, but they also offer a chance for reflection and growth. Always take a day or two to consider a negative review before you respond. Sometimes it just helps to type out a raw response and then cultivate it into one that is much more gentle and professional. (You can do it, trust me!)

In wrapping up, I hope to leave you feeling equipped and inspired to approach Google reviews and online marketing with a blend of ethical integrity and innovative thinking. And if you need them, I have even more marketing strategies to boost your therapy business.

Ultimately, our profession is unique, and so are the ways we can share and celebrate our work!
