Take the Next Step: Texas LPC Supervisor Training

When I am speaking at an event or consulting one-on-one with counselors, I find there is always some confusion about the next right steps to take in a counseling career. Here’s how to become a Texas LPC Supervisor.

Kate Walker Training

Most of us started out with a story of strength and turning that story into a career was life changing. Whether we decided to work in an agency, school, or private practice, getting paid to do what we love is living the dream. Not surprisingly, a few years down the road from that first client lots of mental health professionals are ready for a new challenge, a change of client ‘scenery,’ and improved income. Taking a Texas LPC Supervisor Training can be the ticket that helps counselors expand their skills, give back to the profession, and add another stream of income.

What are the Texas LPC Supervisor requirements?

Supervising LPC Associates takes a special set of skills. The Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council and the Texas State Board of Examiners for Professional Counselors define the scope of practice AND the exact course content a 40 Hour LPC Supervisor Training Course must have. In Texas, the 40 Hour LPC Supervisor training course must be completed in 90 days and include:

  • Supervision methods and techniques for at least 12 clock-hours, covering roles (teacher, counselor, and consultant), focus (process, conceptualization, and personalization), group supervision, multi-cultural supervision (racial, ethnic, and gender issues), and evaluation methods.

  • Executive and administrative tasks for at least 3 clock-hours covering supervision plan, supervision contract, time for supervision, record keeping, and reporting.

  • Ethical, legal, and professional issues for at least 12 clock-hours, covering roles for supervision and standards of practice, Subchapter B of this title (relating to Authorized Counseling Methods and Practices), §681.92 of this title (relating to Experience Requirements (Internship), and §681.93 of this title (relating to Supervisor Requirements), other codes of ethics, and ethical and legal dilemmas.

  • Defining and conceptualizing supervision and models of supervision for at least 3 clock-hours.

  • Supervisory relationship and counselor development for at least 3 clock-hours

How much does LPC supervision cost in Texas?

Giving back to the profession is the best way to think about supervision. In most areas, students who have already accumulated student loan debt are not going to be able to pay your client rate for supervision. While it changes daily, the going rate for supervision is around $55 to $75 dollars per hour. Group supervision is allowed but LPC Associates cannot accrue more than half of their supervision hours in a group setting. One solution is to charge two supervisees for triadic supervision because board rules state triadic can be counted as individual supervision.

What is the best way to add LPC Supervision to my practice?

Growing your counselors into your colleagues is a reward in itself, but don’t worry, LPC Supervision can still add a significant stream of income. There are so many lucrative ways to integrate supervision into a practice! You can:

  • Offer specialized supervision in private practice business.
  • Offer specialized supervision in your niche area especially yoga therapy and walk-talk therapy.
  • Utilize the Ann’s Place Business Model and offer free supervision for associates who will donate 3-4 hours each week at a discounted rate in your practice.

Taking a 40 Hour Texas LPC Supervisor Training course to become a LPC Supervisor will expand your skills, help you give back to the profession, and add another stream of income. The rule of thumb I teach is never use supervision volume to increase income. Why? Although there is no limit on the number of supervisees you can have, supervising doubles YOUR case load and liability. Long and short? Take a great LPC Supervisor Training, learn everything you can, and then go change the world and become a Texas LPC Supervisor!
