Number 5: Go-to resources for common issues.
According to our licensure codes, we are only supposed to counsel within our scope of practice. Uh oh. Level 1 interns don’t HAVE a scope of practice. In fact, counselor supervisors will hold Level 1 Interns’ hands through all of their ‘firsts.’ That could include counseling their first family, their first male client, their first female client, their first gay couple, or their first couple surviving infidelity. Here’s a handy list of books I make all of my new interns read within the first month. Most of them thank me later 🙂
Number 4: Assessment instruments
What is an emergency? When do Level 1 interns ask for help? How do you want them to contact you? So often I hear supervisors say, “Well it’s just common sense!” Silly supervisors, sense is for licensed professionals! If you want your interns to be good at it, you have to teach it. Here are some ‘pocket tools’ your Level 1 interns can use today.
Number 3: People skills
We all have a story about an intern or two who didn’t know how to shake hands, didn’t know how to make eye contact, wore shirts that were unbuttoned too low, or didn’t take a shower after the gym and before seeing clients. Recognizing that there is no such thing as common sense (see number 2), how do you plan to supervise that? Here is a fun video of me talking about things you might need to teach your Level 1 intern.
Number 2: How to take constructive criticism (also known as ‘how to be supervised’)
Your Level 1 interns were smart cookies in their graduate programs. And because you are an excellent interviewer, you have the best of the best. These folks are full of knowledge but a little low on self-awareness and the ability to analyze and synthesize information (see Bloom’s Taxonomy). Now YOU get to teach them to receive your input so they don’t hide things from you. Vicarious liability is real folks. Here is a link to an article to start the conversation.
